 Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation: [se'lena kinta'nija 'peres]; April 16, 1971 until March 31, 1995), known mononymously as Selena, was an American Tejano singer. The "Queen Tejano music", her contribution to fashion and music helped make her one of the most popular Mexican-American entertainers of all time. In the year 2020, Billboard magazine put her in third place in their ranking of "Greatest Latino Artists of All Time", based on both Latin albums and the Latin songs chart. For her choice of clothing, media outlets called her the Tejano Madonna. Her clothing choices are what gave her the name "Tejano Madonna" by various media outlets. Quintanilla, Suzette Quintanilla. In the 1980s, she often was criticised and refused bookings at various venues in Texas because she performed Tejano music, which is a male-dominated genre. However, her fame grew after she won the Tejano Music Award for Female Vocalist of the Year in 1987, and she was awarded nine consecutive times. The singer signed with EMI Latin in 1989 and released her debut album, self-titled in the same year. At the time, her brother became her main music producer and songwriter.Selena has released Entre a Mi Mundo (1992) that peaked at number one on the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart for eight consecutive months. The album's success in the commercial market led music critics to call it the "breakthrough" album of her musical career. "Como la Flor" was one of the album's singles, became her most adored hero song. Live! Live! Amor Prohibido was her 1994 album. It became one of the most popular Latin albums. It was critically acclaimed as being responsible for Tejano music's debut as a marketable genre and it became one of the most popular Latin music subgenres of the time.
